Turnagain Pass

a little slice of heavenLast Friday I took the day off from work and drove an hour south of Anchorage to the Turnagain Pass Area to back country ski. We checked the weather conditions by going to Tim Kelley's website "Crust Outlook Alaska" for the weather advisory. It was a blue bird day.Our friends Steve and Betsy finally made the plunge and retired their leather boots and skinny skis and have never looked back. Warm feet and the ease ofclimbing and turning on fat skis made the day perfect. The peaks through-out Turnagain have been skied for years. My husband grew up in Anchorage and loves to spend almost every waking hour planning our next ski day. The peaks that I've been fortunate enough to ski on have "local" names...Eddy's, Tin Can, Sunburst, PMS, Magnum, Corn Bisquit. I've skied them all now and find that each peak has it's own 'agony'. The rewards however, are great. I've mentioned Tim Kelley's website and from there you can link to web cams, hourly temperatures, Alyeska, and the railroad weather stations. My favorite is Chugach Avalanche Advisory. These sites give you the information needed to make smart decisions.

No kidding. Teeny - you need to get some Patagonia, Mt. Hardware, Marmot, Alpina, etc. sponsorships. You rock. I took a beginner skate ski class last night. I fell twice. On flat ground. :) Lanie is right - we are not worthy!
